Civil Air Patrol - U.S. Air Force Auxiliary

How & Why I got started in CAP

I became involved in Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in November of 1998 after attending a small air show at Craig Field in Jacksonville, Florida.  I met some CAP members with their Cessna aircraft and decided to join, thinking I would get to do a lot of flying (I was working on my private pilots license at the time).  Just due to the way things work in CAP, that turned out not to be the case and I ended up using my electronics & communications background being involved in CAP communications.  I am currently a Captain (awaiting my promotion to Major any day now) and currently hold the position of Director of Communications for the Tennessee Wing overseeing 550 peices of radio equipment (in 30 Squadrons), ensuring proper operations and traing for the Wing and ensuring adherence to National HQ and Air Force Policies & Regulations.

I have always been involved in supporting the community in some sort of volunteer Emergecy Services utilizing radio communications.  I started out a long time ago being involved in REACT during the height of CB Radio.  Some years later, I became involved in the ARES and RACES programs in Ham Radio and became a volunteer reservist with the Desoto County and Memphis & Shelby County Emergency Management Agencies.  All of this lead me to joining CAP.
